In the past fireplace screens were used to make the fireplace more efficient and for safety reasons. Old fireplaces were huge taking up much of the room and being up to 5 feet tall. Children and pets could fall into them so a screen of some sort helped to keep them safe. In the 1700’s Count Rumford invented a smaller fireplace that would still give off heat with more efficiency. It is his design that is used today. Fireplace screens were used in the seventeenth century to match up with the new fireplaces. They stopped smoke from coming into the room and kept embers inside the fireplace.
